"And in the festival of the caliph’s birth, orders were given to bake four hundred pans of cake and sweets… sugar, honey, almonds, and flour were distributed to every shrine in the cemetery for the pious and the poor” - Ibn al-Ma’mun (Fatimid historian)

The Fatimid caliphs paid great attention to the cemetery as it is the resting place of several members of Ahl al-Bayt—descendants of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatima, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad. They embraced ancient Egyptian traditions of visiting the deceased while also fostering new cultural practices and religious rituals centred around the cemetery. The Caliphs frequently participated in public processions within al-Qarafa, engaging with their subjects and establishing a tradition of remembrance that continues to this day.

These practices not only honoured lineage but also attracted scholars and Sufi mystics, transforming the cemetery into a vibrant hub of learning and spirituality. For example, Caliph al-Amir (d. 1130) built a palace within al-Qarafa, which included a Sufi complex where celebrations took place during the Four Nights of Illumination, a ritual festival held between Rajab and Sha'ban. During these nights, Sufis in the Qarafa organized public performances in the presence of the Caliph, holding candles and waving colourful flags. Shrines along the Ahl al-Bayt route were illuminated with olive oil that was supplied for these festivals.

Special sweets and fruits were distributed across al-Qarafa in front of each shrine during religious festivals such as ‘Ashura’ (the death of al-Husayn), mawlid (birthday) of al-Sayyida Nafisa, and the Caliph’s birthday. These celebratory foods were placed on stands known as asmita in front of each shrine, serving both visitors and the local community residing in the cemetery. One mosque in al-Qarafa, al-Narinj (Oranges) Mosque, was named after the abundant oranges distributed in its vicinity throughout the year. 

اهتم الخلفاء الفاطميون بالقرافة اهتماماً كبيراً لاحتوائها على عدد من المشاهد الشريفة لذرية علي بن أبي طالب وفاطمة .  وقد استكمل الفاطميون العادات المصرية القديمة في زيارة الموتى خلال الأعياد، كما ساهموا في تطوير ممارسات وطقوس ثقافية جديدة في القرافة. كانت المواكب الاحتفالية للخلفاء تسير من قصورهم  في قلب القاهرة إلى جبل المقطم والقرافة مروراً بالمشاهد الشريف. كانوا يحتفلون في هذه المواكب مع عامة الناس وبالفعل مازال المصريون إلى يومنا هذا يحيون ذكرى هذه الاحتفالات، محافظين على تقاليد زيارة القرافة التي رُسخت في عهد الفاطميين.

لم تكن ممارسات الفاطميين في القرافة وسيلة للاحتفال بنسب آل البيت فحسب ولكنها كانت وسيلة لجذب العلماء والصوفية، مما حول مجتمع القرافة إلى مركز من مراكز العلوم الدينية والتصوف في المدينة. فعلى سبيل المثال، أنشأ الخليفة الآمر بأحكام الله قصراً له في القرافة وألحق به مصطبة للصوفية حيث أقيمت بها الحضرات احتفالاً بليالي الوقود الأربع التي كانت تُقام بين شهري رجب وشعبان. وفي هذه الليالي، كان أهل الطرق الصوفية في القرافة يرقصون للناس بحضور الخليفة، حاملين بأيديهم الشموع والألوية الملونة. وكانت الأضرحة على طول مسار آل البيت تُضاء بزيت الزيتون الذي كان يُخصص لهذه الاحتفالات. 

ومن ضمن مظاهر الاحتفال، كانت تصنع حلوى خاصة في مطابخ الخلفاء ليتم توزيعها على الناس بجانب الفواكة الطازجة و ترص على موائد ضخمة يقال لها أسمطة. خصص لكل ضريح سماط كبير لإطعام زوار القرافة وسكانها. وكانت عادة ما ترص تلك الأسمطة في الأعياد والاحتفالات الدينية كيوم عاشوراء ومولد السيدة نفيسة  ومولد الخليفة. وقد أحب الناس تلك الفواكه و الحلويات لدرجة أن أحد مساجد القرافة سمي بمسجد النارنج (البرتقال) لعدم انقطاع توزيع النارنج حوله طوال العام.
